Auditions FAQ
answers to the most commonly asked questions asked about our auditions
Q: How do I become a member of aim? A: The conditional membership is offered to those applicants who impresses a judge or a choreographer enough to cast you into a performance or a routine. Those who are chosen are asked to make a decision whether or not they wish to continue with AIM.
Q: When are auditions usually held?
A: Auditions are generally held at the beginning of each academic semester at Barry University. the date and time is based on the academic calendar and is decided by AIM's creative team & executive board.
Q: What should I bring to the audition?
A: Bring a pen, your application, your waiver, some water, a towel, some positive vibes, and a passion for dance. Also, if your interested in showing us a solo bring a PREPARED routine & your music. DO NOT bring guests unless they too are auditioning.
Q: What should I wear? Do I have to buy anything?
A: Check out our guidelines on audition attire to the left to answer this question. You shouldn't have to buy anything, chances are you already own the appropriate apparel. Normally you want to give a very confident appearance, but you also want to be comfortable. We don't take to flashy too well in AIM.
*PLEASE NOTE: THE ENTIRE AUDITION WILL BE DONE BAREFOOT. DANCE SHOES (BALLET, MODERN, OR JAZZ) ARE OPTIONAL if you have them but are not required. in most cases, we may ask you take them off.
Q: How is the audition process? A: The Audition process is a 1 day process. Applicants will be taught an abbreviated combination by the choreographer and will be judged based on precision, performance, personality, and execution. It never takes more than 2 hours to complete the audition process.
Q: Do I have to stay for the entire audition?
A: Yes. ALL applicants are asked to stay through to the duration of the audition process. This will give all the judges and choreographers a fair chance to analyze, decide, & select. In some cases it improves an applicant's chances in being selected. Any applicant(s) that leave early will not be considered
Q: Are there any cuts?
A: No. In an AIM audition, there are no more than 3 combos taught to the applicants. There is a review and judging process after each combo is taught. During the judging, The applicants execute the combo in small groups & the choreographers make their selections before moving on.
Q: Is experience required?
A: No, not at all. AIM encourages all individuals with a PASSION for DANCE, regardless or age, sex, race, creed, or dance experience. Although experience may be preferred in some instances, often the choreographers are willing to embrace raw talent and simultaneously teach you while they choreograph.
Q: But What if its not my style?
A: everyone is encouraged to learn and try to perform the combos taught by the choreographers, even if the dance is not your particular style. we take into account that not everyone has had the same dance experience, and although the auditions are swift & challenging, the combos are never too hard. we may not cover certain genres in the audition, but we at AIM utilize each & every style of dance imaginable & we try our best in the audition to cast our applicants for a variety of genres & events.
Q: What style(s) of dance does AIM incorporate anyway? A: All of them. From African to Zumba. What style do you do? Yep, we do that too. BOOM! (mind blown)
Q: But what styles will be at the auditions? A: Who knows. It varies per semester based on the choreographers we choose and the performances & productions we are scheduled to do. Typically, we've always incorporated a Hip-Hop round, a contemporary round, and then something else. either way, it'll never be extremely difficult. Just be ready to dance.
Q: Can I create a solo? Can I become a soloist?
A: Sure, why not. For new applicants solos are not required, but if you feel that the judges will not see your greatest potential in the audition rounds or if you have something else to offer, you can indicate before the audition begins that you have created a solo on your application.
A: Auditions for soloists are reserved for applicants that have already been a part of AIM at least one semester, and requires a separate audition. On occasions AIM will utilize new applicants for solos, but your probably won't be considered a featured soloist. We try to keep this a collaborative group effort.
Q: I want to join, but I can't dance. at all.
A: Not even a little? it is quite alright, don't be discouraged. If you have the passion and the potential, we have a spot for you. AIM has recruited out a few talented folks who had never danced before coming to college. Most have been amazing. Some of them we try to forget about. Its all a work in progress.
Q: When do I get my results? Where do I get them from?
A: AIM delegates through out the audition process as well as after the entire audition session is over. Once the decisions have been made, ALL applicants are given their results at the same time, within 3 days of the audition date. AIM will inform applicants in an e-mail whether (or not) they've made it in.
We will not disclose any discussions or factors that "sealed your fate", but if you are selected we will inform you which choreographer selected you & when to attend the meeting as a conditional member. We also post the results on the dance bulletin board in Thompson Hall near the Miller Studio.
Q: What happened? I auditioned & didn't make it? A: Bummer. It happens to the best of us sometimes. Unfortunately, that means there are no opportunities for you this semester. We do encourage you to join our creative team. The creative team works closely with the choreographers to help put together the essentials for our productions. The creative team is also allowed to attend our open rehearsals to strengthen themselves as dancers, encouraged to tryout for our special events, and invited to audition again the following semester.
Q: What if I can not make the audition?
A: If you cannot make the audition date that is very unfortunate but we take our audition process very seriously. We only have auditions once a semester yet, in a very rare chance you may be put on a waiting list if needing extra performers.
Q: I made it pass the auditions!! but I can't stay in aim.
A: Hey, Life happens. If you can not commit to an AIM membership we understand. You can always audition again.
